This article explores how information technology can improve Nigeria’s transportation system through smart traffic management, road-safety monitoring, emergency-response platforms, data analysis and sustainable public transport. It also highlights the importance of training, public awareness and collaboration between the government and private sector.

This article explores how information technology can help create a safer, smarter and more efficient transportation system in Nigeria. It highlights major challenges in the sector, including road accidents, traffic congestion, poor infrastructure, insecurity and unreliable public transport services.

The article explains that digital tools such as speed cameras, automated ticketing systems, traffic-monitoring platforms, emergency-response apps and data analytics can improve road safety and support better decision-making. It also discusses how vehicle tracking, digital ticketing and real-time travel information can make public transport more organised and convenient.

In addition, information technology can support sustainable mobility through ride-sharing, traffic optimisation and electric-vehicle infrastructure. However, successful implementation requires proper training for transport officials, drivers and law-enforcement officers, as well as public education.

Overall, the article shows that combining physical infrastructure with smart technology can improve mobility, reduce accidents and emissions, strengthen security and support Nigeria’s economic growth.
